Bible Teaching
Chapter by Chapter through the Bible
There’s nothing a child loves more than to walk with their parents, hand in hand. Whether it’s exploring new territory or tramping over old ground, it brings great delight to the child. It is not just the activity, but the company that is important. A parent can open up a whole new world to a child, whether physical or spiritual. We can show them new heights of beauty and new depths of wonder and their childish enthusiasm will spur us to go on.
This is where the title for this material was born. “Walk through the Word with me” is designed to help us as parents to take a walk with our children through God’s Word. As Christian parents, our priority should be teaching our children from the best book, the Bible. Too often we underestimate how much our children can take in, learn and remember of God’s Word. We are content to give them the bare minimum, excusing ourselves by saying they won’t understand, remember etc. But if we were to experiment we’d be shocked at how much they can (at a very young age) take in. Yes, there may be times when we have to metaphorically carry them on our shoulders over passages they do not understand, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. Who among us did not relish shoulder top rides and who’s to say, that with the widened view from higher ground our children may come to understand what we thought they never would.
“Walk through the Word with me” aims to take you and your child through the Bible chapter by chapter, book by book. There will be times when it seems like you are running down hill, laughing, arm in arm as you read through familiar stories, but there will also be times when you’ll be trudging up hill. But remember, most children love climbing, as you’ll discover when your toddler greets you from the top of the stairs or perched precariously on top of the washing basket. Don’t skip ‘difficult’ passages or concepts – the view is much better from the top.
To change the metaphor, your Bible reading times with your children are the times to lay the foundations for their later spiritual life and knowledge. Whether you use this material for homeschool devotions, family worship or bedtime Bible reading is up to you. My aim in putting it together is not only to give you useful information – background, memory verses, activities, but also to inspire you to think big. Your child’s mind is active, open and ready to be filled. There will be many things that fight for its attention, but you as parent must be first there filling it with what is best –God’s Word.
